2016 / Design Lead & Founder Filmyr - find the stuff you love from movies and TV.

The problem

I just saw the coolest jacket ever in that movie. So where can I buy it?

Solution

Building a community where users can contribute and share their knowledge about the products, places and music in movies. Not to be a competitor to IMDb but instead complement it.

Filmyr was about exploration so it was built to be a never ending flow of things (not only products but also places and music).

If the user visited a specific movie, actor or anything else we would show the connections that we had. For example products used in a movie.

The community aspect was very important and we wanted users to contribute by discussing the content, making their own collections etc.

We also had the concept of hunts, where users would be rewarded for making our content richer.

But MOST importantly, we wanted the users to help us get content. We built a chrome plugin that the user could use to easily add something to Filmyr.

The plugin automatically populated the necessary fields.

If that didn't work out the user could easily pick the right content instead.

And lastly create connections with Filmyrs existing content.

Filmyr met a gruesome end when we ran out of funding, we simply did not have the runway needed for what we were trying to achieve. A hard blow but an amazing lesson learned.
